Volunteering @
CAN is a unique, fairly small (but significant) user-led charity of people with learning disabilities, based in the Causeway Area of Northern Ireland.
Our underpinning aim is to create an organisation for informed and empowered individuals to push back the barriers to enable them to have the same opportunities as every other citizen… “Enhancing Lives…Creating Change”   We work with people with learning disabilities aged 12 and over…we have several Social Enterprises including CAN Can Recycling, CAN Can Bazaar (our shop), CAN Can Upcycling and CAN Can Frame It.  The Compass Shadow Council is the first ever elected body of people with learning disabilities and we run 3 x BASE’s (Day Opportunities for people with Learning Disabilities) in Ballymena, Ballymoney and Coleraine. 100% of the proceeds from our Social Enterprises go to support local people with learning disabilities. Check us out at www.cancanrecycling.co.uk or www.compasspeople.org.
Volunteers play a vital role within our organisation. The time and dedication given by our volunteers make a real difference to the lives of our members. Benefits of Volunteering include a sense of satisfaction from helping others, accessing training, new skills and opportunities, making new friends, build your confidence/self-esteem, building your voluntary work experience and doing something rewarding in your spare time. Out of
pocket expenses paid!

Types of Volunteering… We have lots of different types of volunteering at Compass and our volunteers dedicate anything from a couple of hours a month to a couple of days per week to the organisation.  We need people who will work alongside our members, supporting them to carry out their roles in the various projects . We also need volunteers to support our Base projects in Ballymoney, Ballymena and Coleraine.  These are projects for people with learning disabilities developed with Northern Health & Social Care Trust’s Day Opportunities Programme. The Base’s provide opportunities to meet and develop friendships. Volunteers provide support and connections to participate in community-based leisure activities – such as shopping; bowling; going to the cinema; computers; arts and crafts etc.
Compass has its own ‘previously loved boutique’ which not only generates an income for the charity, but also enables our members to have placements in a retail environment within the local community!  Our Volunteers help run the shop and support our members in gaining skills in retail, sorting the clothing, ironing, pricing, keeping the shop tidy and serving customers!
